Style 101: Farmhouse décor

Transform your home into a charming country retreat by following these simple steps. Happy decorating!

    1. Stick to practical pieces.
Farmhouses then were decorated with sturdy and functional pieces. To evoke that vibe, avoid delicate items. Scour flea markets for items that are rustic but not frou-frou.

    2. Mix old with new elements.
Farmhouse-style décor is lovely… except when you go overboard. Mix it up with modern touches; for instance,  a rustic harvest table lit by modern lighting. The beauty of wooden Shaker cabinets will be stand out when combined with sleek stainless steel appliances. Remember: you want to look updated, not outdated.

    3. Vintage, vintage, vintage!
Key vintage pieces lend character to a room. Choose vintage side chairs, a lamp or two, or a table – but not all together. Be judicious in choices and placement. And again, vintage items  look especially cool next to newer stuff, which leads us to our next piece of advice…

    4. Don’t be afraid to mix and match.
Even when it comes to furniture, matchy-matchy is so out. Don’t do uniform floral, for example. That’s why we encourage you to play with vintage items you’ve scored and mix them up with newer pieces.

    5. Think shabby chic.
When the farmhouse look comes into mind, we think about weathered finishes such as peeling paint and rough wood. It’s great for accent and texture, but again, don’t go overboard lest you take the chic out of shabby and end up with something that just looks dilapidated and sad.

    6. Find the right balance…
You might want to inject a little floral in the form of curtains or wallpaper, and that’s fine – we want you to decorate your home with things you love. Just remember to keep everything tasteful and balanced.
