Although the community of Zavalla, Texas is small, it has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. Named after Lorenzo de Zavala, this community made significant contributions to the lumber industry in this areaof Eastern Texas. It was also a major shipping center for local farmers who grew and harvested cotton during the early 1900s. The town’s population held steady at 100 to 200 since it was founded and until fairly recently.
When Zavalla was incorporated in 1975 and the nearby Sam Rayburn Reservoir became a draw among house hunters seeking to buy property near the Reservoir, this tiny blip of town saw its population increase. According to the 2010 United States census, Zavalla is now home to approximately 701 residents.

There are a number of small businesses and government offices in Zavalla, but the majority of residents drive out of town for work and recreation. The Sam Rayburn Reservoir is an especially popular destination, with residents of the rural community keen on enjoying opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, and hiking.
