The Toledo Bend Reservoir is so long that it borders three counties on the Texas side and three parishes on the Louisiana side. In Texas, most of it lies along the counties of Shelby and Sabine, with a small part at the northeastern corner of Newton County 56 percent or 101,600 acres of the reservoir’s lands are in Louisiana, while 44 percent or 80,000 acres are in Texas.

The Toledo Bend Dam was built by the two bordering states during the 1960s, and it has the distinction of being the country’s only hydroelectric power project that wasn’t financially supported by the federal government. Borne out of years of planning and hard work, the Toledo Bend Reservoir has been lighting the homes and irrigating the agricultural lands of surrounding counties and parishes for four decades.
