An Original Texas County

Named after the Sabine River, the county of Sabine was organized in 1837 and is one of Texas’ original counties. The area that it now encompasses was initially inhabited by the Ais tribe of the Caddo Indians, who had lived here for millennia before the first Western explorer had set foot in the region.

Starting out as a route into Texas (the Old San Antonio Road), a ferry was eventually built in the area and it wasn’t long before settlers started putting up the first Toledo Bend, TX lake view homes on land that would in time be known as Sabine County. After Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, Sabine was formed and today it is now home to more than 10,000 people.

History is important in Sabine County. Its original county seat, Milam, was the first community that immigrants to Texas first laid eyes on. In the mid-19 th century, a new county seat was established and named Hemphill after a Texas Supreme Court Justice. Today, Hemphill’s distinctive courthouse square is one of East Texas’ historic must-sees. The stately and gracious courthouse and the buildings that surround it all date back from the 19 th to the early 20 th century. When you stroll past them you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported into a bygone age.

Other significant historic landmarks are the McMahn Chapel near Geneva; the century-old and still in business Nethery’s Store in Milam; the Gaines-Oliphint House, the oldest standing log house in the state; and the Sabine County Jail Museum.
