Shelbyville is located seven miles southeast of Center, Texas, at the junction of Farm Road 417 and State Highway 87. Despite its fair-sized population ofover 3,400, its population density is very low owing to the fact that it’s a big town, with a land area of more than 216 square miles.
Shelbyville is a family-oriented community, with more than half of the population composed of married couples with children. This unincorporated town has its origins in 1820, when settlers from Tennessee first moved in and called it Nashville. Its name was soon changed to Shelbyville in 1837 to honor the hero of the American Revolution and governor of Kentucky, Isaac Shelby. This was the original seat of the county until 1866, when a vote was reached to move the county seat closer to the center of Shelby County.
