As you go about 50 miles northeast of Beaumont, and arrive at the junction of State Highway 87 and U.S. Highway 190, you will find yourself in the city of Newton. The county seat of Newton County was incorporated in 1935 and to date,it is the only incorporated city in the county. This fairly sized community was named in honor of John Newton, an American Revolutionary War soldier.
Once a community inhabited by only 150 people, the town has sincegrown and thrived amidst its beautiful natural surroundings. Newton was sustained by its lumber industry, not unlike most other towns in East Texas.
