The little City of Joaquin in northeast Shelby County is home to a population of just over 800. Of this number, almost half are made up of families. The town was established when Benjamin Franklin Morris, who owned about 500 acres in northeastern Shelby County, donated 100 acres to found a new townsite in 1885. Morris named it Joaquin after his grandson.
When the town burned down in 1913, it was promptly rebuilt and eventually developed into what you can see today: a place of quiet promise and a sense of achievement. Some of the oldest businesses that still operate today are Worsham’s Grocery, a family-run business established in 1946, and Dean’s Hardware started in 1919, also family run.
